A Mother's Instinct

IMG_5487.jpg

We’re stripping mother of their instincts from the very moment they give birth. Many birthing people feel that primal instinct to protect and hold their newborn. Yet our birthing system hardly allows for this. That sacred pause after the labor that is birth, and has been for eons, has been stripped away. Baby is taken aside to be cleaned and medically assessed. Then we have the family members who need their turn and photo op. while we are left there laying being medically assessed ourselves. This sacred pause, the magical hour, after birth has scientifically researched benefits for the birthing person and newborn. Benefits mentally, physically, and emotionally. If we allow the space for this moment, our primal nature can unfold, we see baby take the steps to nurse – when it’s ready- and birthing people are fund to have better emotional/mental health postpartum.
